Brian M. Barefoot has more than 30 years of experience in financial services, having served in senior executive roles with top brokerage and financial firms, including PaineWebber Group Inc. and Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. His expertise includes the capital markets, where he has been involved with leading public equity and debt transactions, as well as private equity raise-ups. He also is experienced in trading, banking, and risk management. Mr. Barefoot is currently responsible for new business development and providing strategic advice to Carl Marks & Co. businesses.
From 2001 to 2008, Mr. Barefoot served as President of Babson College, an internationally recognized management school in Massachusetts, where he previously served as Chairman of its Board of Trustees. Upon his retirement, he was elected President Emeritus.
Prior to Babson, Mr. Barefoot served as President and Chief Executive Officer of NeoVision Hypersystems Inc., a leading provider of software solutions for the financial services industry. He remained with NeoVision as a Nonexecutive Chairman of the Board after joining the college.
At PaineWebber, Mr. Barefoot served as Executive Vice President and Director of Investment Banking, was a member of its Board of Directors and President of its subsidiary, PaineWebber International. Mr. Barefoot spent 25 years at Merrill Lynch & Co., retiring as Senior Vice President and Managing Director. He also founded Frontier Sports Development Corp. in 1992 and served as President and Chief Executive Officer.
At Cynosure Inc., Mr. Barefoot serves as Director, is Chair of the Audit Committee, and is a member of the organization’s Compensation and Governance Committees. He also is a Director and member of the Audit Committee and Chair of the Finance and Business Operations Committee of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and serves on the Board of Trustees of Saint Edward’s School, in Vero Beach, Florida. In 1998, he received the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor from the Ellis Island Honor Society for his contributions to the business and educational communities.
Mr. Barefoot received a BS from Babson College, earned an MBA from Pace University’s Lubin School of Business, and has attended a number of Harvard Business School Executive Education programs.
